The region is home to Mesa Verde National Park and the San Juan Mountains Montezuma County offers a variety of opportunities for hiking, camping, fishing, biking, rafting, and skiing. The eastern edge of the County is home to the La Plata Mountains and continues westward into High Desert. The westernmost boundary of the county features Sleeping Ute Mountain and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument.

Hiking / Biking

Aqueduct Trails: a recently opened non-motorized trail system (e-bikes OK) two miles NW of Mancos

Boggy Draw: a complex of hiking and biking trails near Dolores

Phil’s World: two sections of hiking and biking trails just outside Cortez

Sand Canyon Trail: a few miles west of Cortez is a 6.5-mile trail (one-way) used mostly by hikers and mountain bikers

National Parks

Mesa Verde National Park: visitor center, ruins, guided ranger walks, hiking trails, scenic drives, overlooks; off Highway 160 7 miles west of Mancos

Canyon of the Ancients National Monument: museum, ruins, sculpture garden, nature trail, McPhee Reservoir overlooks and more in Dolores

Yucca House National Monument: an unexcavated Montezuma Valley Ancestral Pueblo site

Cortez Recreation Center: gym, pools, weight room, handball, tennis, indoor track. (**Note: A number of private gyms in the area have also opened pickleball courts.)

Baseball, Softball, Golf and Soccer: scheduled summer games and tourneys in Cortez

Skiing: Nordic Skiing in Mancos at Chicken Creek and Mesa Verde National Park (at campground) and Downhill Skiing in Hesperus, CO.
